ISRAEL'S LIMITED MONARCHY

In Deuteronomy 17:14-20, Yahweh set the "Laws of the King," limiting the power of a king and prohibited certain excesses:

  1. Must be an Israelite chosen by Yahweh (Dt 17:15).
  2. He must not acquire many horses (Dt 17:16a).
  3. He must not send to Egypt to increase the power of his army (Dt 17:16b)
  4. He must not have many wives (Dt 17:17a).
  5. He must not acquire vast quantities of wealth (Dt 17:17b).
  6. He must keep a copy of these laws with him and must read them every day (Dt 17:18-19).
  7. He must be a servant to his people and not think of himself as superior to the people (Dt 17:20).
THE LIMITED POWER OF A KING Deuteronomy 17:14-20 SOLOMON'S FAILURE AS A KING
1 Kings Chapters 10-11
He must not acquire many horses (Dt 17:16a). Solomon had 12 thousand horses (1 Kng 10:26).
He must not send to Egypt to increase the power of his army (Dt 17:16b). Solomon built up a force of chariots and cavalry from Egypt (1 Kng 10:26, 29).
He must not have many wives (Dt 17:17a). Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kng 11:3).
He must not acquire vast quantities of wealth (Dt 17:17b). The weight of gold received annually by Solomon amounted to 666 talents of gold (1 Kng 10:14).
